Sketches of High Density Life

Harare has been drawing people under its skirts for over a century now. The city’s ‘townships’ are inhabited as much by strangers as friends, hardened old-timers as naive newcomers, embracing a mix of languages, traditions mysteries, and confusions.

Wonder Guchu’s Sketches of High Density Life draws on a landscape where rumour, reality, and urban myth converge. Who was killed to the strains of ‘The lion sleeps tonight’? Where do the ghosts live under the bridge? Who was murdered beside the house with a blue door?

Guchu’s light impressionistic touch plays around the edges of his characters’ thoughts and actions, opening as many doors as it closes, and leaving the reader to wonder, ‘Did this really happen?’
