Freelance journalist makes bail

Mike Saburi, a freelance television journalist who was arrested in Harare on Sept. 13 has been released on bail.

Saburi, was arrested and jailed after he was caught filming the police assaulting people who were gathering to take part in the trade union protest march in Harare.

Foster Dongozi, General Secretary of the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ), said Saburi is accused of having gone beyond his journalistic work while filming the protest march.

Gabriel Baglo, Director of the International Rederation of Journalists (IFJ) Africa condemned the treatment Saburi experienced at the hands of the police in Zimbabwe and emphasized that even though the government had forbidden the demonstration, it was still a newsworthy event.

“Banning media coverage and trampling on press freedom will not solve any of the problems in Zimbabwe,” Baglo said.
