Ian Holding is a 27-year-old white Zimbabwean teacher living and working in Harare. Unfeeling is his first novel and is based on what happened to a pupil in his school.
A searing, angry novel that explores the nature of brutality in a country whose first language is violence, Unfeeling is one of the first literary attempts to come to terms with the recent history of Zimbabwe. This is fiction from the frontlines of a nation in crisis, a country from which the media has been excluded and few local reports emerge.
Unfeeling has been shortlisted in the EDS Dylan Thomas Prize.
