Monday Links: Morgan Mandel; River Wolton; George Lamming

  • Morgan Mandel‘s latest novel, Girl of My Dreams, is being billed as “a Cinderella story About an Assistant Turned Reality Show Contestant.” The book’s cover is brilliant.
  • River Wolton has started a blog for the Derbyshire Laureateship — with the aim of providing an informal resource for poets, poetry, people and places in and around Derbyshire. She will also be posting about readings and workshops. Check it out and feel free to let us know if you have your own blog.
  • In “Literature and Politics,” which appears in the Trinidad and Tabago Express, Rupert Lewis discusses George Lamming‘s novels and speeches. He raises some interesting questions about the role of the writer in society and about the relationships between literature, politics and language. Lewis also suggests that one of Lamming’s central preoccupation, has been to press on readers [and listeners(?)] ‘possible “alternative directions”‘ Caribbean society could/should take.
